Everyday Uses for Coconut Oil

coconut oil

I have a bit of a confession to make, I love all things coconut. Seriously, I think I’m slightly obsessed but if something has coconut in it there’s a pretty good chance I’m going to love it.

Coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties in it due to the high percentage of Lauric acid it contains. This allows it to penetrate your skin and hair better than other products and oils.

Below are a few of my current favourite uses for it;

Hair Mask

I apply the oil to my hair, pop it in a top knot, and leave it in my hair for at least an hour (sometimes overnight). I then wash and style my hair as I normally would. The coconut oil hydrates my hair leaving it feeling so soft and gives it a beautiful, glossy, natural shine.

Heat Styler

If you don’t have time to try the hair mask I found this also worked well. Take a small amount of oil, melt between your fingers and apply throughout your hair then style. It left my hair feeling soft and frizz free.

Make-up Remover

Melt a small amount between your finger and rub into your face. Dampen a muslin cloth and gently wipe off the oil. I was so impressed with how easily it took off waterproof mascara and it left the skin around my eyes feeling really soft.

Shaving Cream

Just apply to legs and shave as normal. This made shaving really easy as the razor just glides across your skin. It left my skin feeling really soft and gave them a nice natural glow. I would advise to be careful if shaving with coconut oil as it makes everything very slippery.

Apply this to any area where you are experiencing dry skin, the fatty acids create a barrier locking in the moisture.

Face Wash

I was most sceptical about applying oil to my face seeing as I do tend to get breakouts in my chin area but my skin has actually made a massive improvement since starting to use this. I generally use this as a face wash in the  evening and I wake up with my skin feeling really hydrated.

Oil Pulling

For those of you unfamiliar with this, oil pulling is when you take 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for about 15 minutes. This really helped with bad breath and whitening my teeth.

All that and you can cook with it! I think my love for coconuts has grown, do you have any coconut oil beauty favourites?
